Friday photos
Bought myself an amaryllis at Walmart back in October. It was a special Pink Ribbon package. The pot that came with it was as usual too small but I had another one so that was okay.
Anyhow… it decided to bloom just in time for Thanksgiving. Two GIANT blooms opened up: they were larger than my face!
Everyone that came over did double-takes at the thing… is that a REAL plant? Yep… and pretty awesome.
Those blossoms have now wilted and been cut off, but it had 2 more buds… So I’ll have flowers for at least another week.
Pies I made last week. Yep, the blackberry pie on the left overflowed. Made a big mess in my oven before I stuck a cookie sheet under it. I forgot to take photos of the apple and pumpkin pies…. oh well!
This is all for now… It’s daylight out now and commuter traffic should be easing up… I have shopping and errands to do.
hugs,
Vyx

I love amaryllis! I get some every few years. I’ve replanted them outside and though they actually grow, they never bloom there. (as opposed to my neighbor’s!)
If you ever have something spill over in the oven and want to stop the smoke without turning the oven off, cover the spill with baking soda. (easier to do before the cookie sheet goes in to catch the rest of the drips)
I would have loved to have some of the berry pie! One of my favorites.
Better yet… don’t overfill the pie crust. :) I =knew= I was overfilling it and did it anyhow. I do that with apple pies sometimes, which is why I now make my apple pie in a big Corning-ware casserole dish. Never have it overflow that way, with the square sides. Probably I should start making the berry pie in a casserole dish, too, as this isn’t the first one to overflow. :)
This is the first amaryllis I’ve owned. I used to buy them for Mom when I could find different colors but never got one myself. You can get them to rebloom, but I think the trick is neglect! Obviously we can’t plant them outdoors here… they’d just freeze to death. Mom’s tend to bloom every year, but not at holidays… they are on their natural schedule. Some of them have calved, so at one time Mom had quite a few amaryllis!
Congratulations on success with your very first amaryllis! It is a beauty. I only bought one once, a red one, and it did well. That’s one of those things I wish I could remember to do in time for Christmas more often. I also forced a dish of paper whites one year.
Thanks Paula! I think they need about 6 weeks head start… I wasn’t worried about it blooming in time for anything. I just like flowers! I’ve never done the paperwhites as I’ve heard that they will never bloom again even if you plant them in the ground. Sad, really.
Oh man, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those flowers in person.
How beautiful!
I know what to get you for your birthday, then. :)
