Cleaning!
I’m not at all known for my spotless house. Sure, the bathrooms get cleaned fairly often, and stuff like that, but I don’t spend a lot of time at it. Got plenty of more fun things to do. :)
Today I’m actually washing curtains and drapes and washing windows. In particular the living room window. The drapes were filthy, the lace curtains were brown… and you could barely see out of the window. I don’t think Ron’s ex was much into housework, either, lol!
No idea how old the drapes were… I suspect that they’ve been on the window since they moved here back in 1991 or so. Maybe they are more recent, but no one has ever vacuumed them or anything that I can tell. They were pretty much glued to the curtain rods. The hooks that came out of the drapes are corroded and rusty, yikes!
They said Dry Clean Only. I tossed em in the washer anyhow. Two washes and two rinses, and they are now in the dryer on delicate. They didn’t look too much the worse for wear after coming out of the wash, so hopefully they’ll be fine. If not, I guess I’ll be doing some shopping! (I’ve had things like that just shred in the washer/dryer because of sunlight damage)
The window itself was so filthy that I washed it at first with just a couple paper towels soaked with window cleaner. Just that made a big difference. Then I went back and did over with more paper towels and more window cleaner… and then decided that there was just as much dirt on the outside.
Outside I washed with a carwash brush and some Simple Green in a bucket of hot water. Hose to rinse. Had to do it twice, and then go inspect from the inside.
I think I could now sit by the window and read without any extra light… even at night, lol!
Will update this later as drapes and such come out of washer and dryer…. in the meantime, back to cleaning!
Later….
So, everything is out of the dryer and hung back up. One of the drape linings ripped a bit… sunlight damage I expect. And the drapes themselves shrunk quite a bit, while the lining did not. Not really a big deal… they were floor length drapes and there is furniture and such in front of them.
I’m not unhappy with how they look… yeah, could be better, but heck now they are CLEAN. Didn’t have as many curtain hooks as there should have been, and a couple of the traverse rod hanger bits broke off so we have a bit of sagging…. but that’s all covered up pretty much by the swags. The swags don’t look as stiff (nor are they, I put fabric softener in both loads) but they seem to be hanging pretty much as they were… any shrinkage is not as noticeable.
Didn’t put the screens back on the windows… we never open those windows anyhow, and the cats have torn the screens up pretty well. Better view without the screens.
I need to do some more major cleaning like this… but more than cleaning I need to de-clutter the house, lol! Oh well… off to walk the dogs now! I need a break…
hugs,
Vyx
